Cynthia specializes in intellectual property law. Both a registered patent practitioner and an experienced trademark attorney, Cynthia provides strategic intellectual property legal advice to small and large clients in a broad array of industries.  She takes pride in providing her clients with practical and cost-effective strategies tailored to their individual needs. 

Cynthia provides patent searches, patent application and prosecution services, and US and international patent portfolio management. She also advises clients on patentability, freedom to operate, infringement, validity and licensing issues. Her patent experience includes acoustic, cleantech, electromechanical, industrial, mechanical, medical, and optical devices and methods, as well as software and related “smart” devices.

She also counsels clients on all aspects of trademark law, including worldwide searching, registration, and enforcement of rights. Her experience spans a broad range of industries, including cosmetics, footwear and apparel, home goods, medical devices, pharmaceuticals, hardware, software, mobile apps, computer gaming, cloud-based technology, telecommunications, financial services, and education, to name a few.  

Prior to joining Breakwater, Cynthia spent several years at Knobbe Martens, one of the largest IP law firms in the US. During law school, Cynthia externed for the Honorable Irma E. Gonzalez in the United States District Court for the Southern District of California.

Cynthia holds a BS in Mechanical Engineering from Columbia University School of Engineering and Applied Science, as well as a BA in Environmental Science from Barnard College. She graduated magna cum laude from the University of San Diego School of Law. Cynthia is a member of the California State Bar and is registered to practice before the United States Patent & Trademark Office.
